Monday, December 17. 2007Direct QuickTime for Mac download link
Just a braindump, since I have to look that up regularly: If you try to download QuickTime from Apple's site, you (since recently) cannot choose anymore whether you want the Windows or the Mac version. Instead, the server-side logic reads out the browser user agent string and shows you either the Windows or Mac page. Now imagine that you want to download the Mac version but from a Windows PC (for instance because your Mac only has dial-up). You could try to change your user agent strings to those of Mac Safari, but there is (at least currently) a more convenient way: Go to this direct download page which provides you with access to the Leopard, Tiger, and Panther versions of the latest QuickTime version. This URL is the very iframe that is loaded on the QuickTime download page — if you are using a Mac (or pretending to).
Update 2009-07-16: Still works for iTunes 8.2.1 (for Leopard and Tiger) Trackbacks

"Now imagine that you want to download the Mac version but from a Windows PC": this is exactly what I was trying to do. Many thanks for the hint.
Goddamn this was handy. Thankyou so much - the Mac page was frustrating the heck out of me! Successfully downloaded via PC.
They could at least have a link at the bottom of the page saying "looking for QT for Mac?"
Thank you very much!!
I was trying to get quicktime for mac from my PC connection, but couldn't reach to do it. Your link was very very helpful. How did you find that page? Thanks again. Carlo P.S. In the Apple Quiktime italian download page there is a link which says: download quicktime for Mac (when you're accessing with a Pc), but doesn't work at all, it redirects you to the same quicktime for windows download page..
Thanks so much for the link. I just lost an hour searching. Without your link i could have lost an afternoon!!!!
Apple, shame on you.
Apple does not care how frustrated you are. I remember when the downloads and support pages were basically the same thing and it was easy to find exactly what you needed. Now its like a bad cafeteria
"Have a peanut allergy Tommy?... Well thats just tuff aint' it ?!" I'm surprised they still have legacy support there must be some politics there that we are not seeing. I used to love Apple but sadly not much anymore.
No doubt! Many thanks. I have been frustrated by this for the past few updates.
i have the same ..

Grrr i have safari (which is not mentioned at the downloads) my safari does not work somehow (i dont mind i dont use the internet for my maccc) !!! so now i am looking for the same solution ur offering... but for safari !!! i can not play any itunes and ipod (i recently bought) grrr HELP !!! Thank you so much for your help. Been looking for a way around this flaw for ages (ok, since 7.5.5 came out!).
You posted this a long time ago and Apple still is clueless that sometimes people need to download Mac files from a PC. Go figure. Thanks for posting this!!!
Wow! Thank you very much! This is exactly what I'm looking for. Btw, do you have the link to download Safari for Mac from a PC? I'm looking for it too.
Thank you so much! I can't connect the broadband up to my MacBook, so this was really helpful!
I just upgraded my iTunes, not realising I needed this aswell..
Hi, this is exactly what I have been desperately looking for - but the link is not working today. Maybe it has expired now? any ideas?
Thanks...
I was trying to do the reverse (download QT for Win on a Mac). Amazingly changing "mac" to "win" worked!

THANKS! Apple is just so frustrating, it's unbelievable. I have to edit and post a feature on my Windows machines. But it was captured and pre-edited in FCP by someone else and now I can't see any of it. And I thought HDV footage was supposed to be an open format. It's incomprehensible why they would lock the footage to the platform like this. Do they expect me to run out and buy a Mac/FCP to edit MY footage shot on MY STANDARD HDV camera? Thanks a lot.
Thanks again -- always have to come find this link... I wish apple would quick be so damn helpful and just let me get my work done... .
Again, thanks
again another thank you steve jobs pull your head out of your ass and think about how your motives affect us actual users of your products we made you rich now let us do our work.
I couldn't believe it! I was thinking this was my fault... i couldn't find the sneaky little radio button in a dark corner somewhere! awww well, saved by some thoughtful citizens is even better, cheers!
i also worked out the 'win' swap around for this from your post after a search for "how can I download quicktime for windows using a mac" in google.
saved me a lot of frustration! |
