In eigener Sache: Gerade habe ich anlässlich der BASTA-Konferenz die ersten Exemplare des ASP.NET 3.5 Programmer's Choice, erschienen bei Addison-Wesley, in den Händen. Zusammen mit Karsten Samaschke, Jürgen Kotz, Andreas Kordwig und Christian Trennhaus haben Tobias und ich ca. 1184 Seiten rund um das Thema ASP.NET 3.5 zusammengetragen. Ich kan mich zwar immer noch nicht an das "Visual Basic 2008" gewöhnen (korrekter wäre "Visual Basic 9", aber anscheinend haben sich alle Verlage heimlich abgesprochen, auf das besser zuordenbare 2008 zu setzen), aber ansonsten freue ich mich sehr über die neue Auflage -- das Buch ist aus unseren ASP.NET Kompendien hervorgegangen.

Ich bin noch bis Freitag auf der BASTA, vielleicht sehen wir uns ja?

Wer ein MSDN-Abonnement hat, weiß es sicher schon: Visual Studio 2008 Team System ist seit dem Wochenende auch auf Deutsch verfügbar, die anderen Editionen folgen sukzessive. Seit heute Mittag gibt es auch die Express Editions (inklusive dem Visual Web Developer), und wie mich Uwe Baumann gerade informiert hat, sind die deutschen Microsoft-Seiten bereits aktualisiert. Viel Spaß bei der Installation

Everybody noticed that Scott Guthrie announced the availability of the .NET Framework Library source code, but almost unnoticed went this comment:

Yes - we'll be releasing the source and enabling debugging for the Silverlight libraries as well once they ship.

However I think Scott only means the Silverlight libraries used to build and compile Silverlight 2.0 applications, not the browser plugin.

Found this in Stefan Fischerländer's (German) blog some time ago, and although I do not quite agree, I found it really funny. Since today is Perl's 20th birthday, I thougt it would be a good day to post that.

Larry Wall recently wrote the very amusing article "Programming is Hard, Let's Go Scripting...". He draws a pretty darn funny line between scripting languages and programming languages. He also mentiones PHP, of course. At first, he compares PHP to JAM (Jury-rigged All-purpose Meta-language), a language Larry wrote himself, in BASIC!

JAM was an inside-out text-processing language much like PHP, except that HTML hadn't been invented yet. We mostly used it as a fancy macro processor for BASIC. Unlike PHP, it did not have 3,000 functions in one namespace. We wouldn't have had the memory, for one thing.

Alright, cheap shot. However the following cracked me up about as much as the Perl 6 release schedule:

We've also seen the rise of PHP, which takes the worse-is-better approach to dazzling new depths, as it were. By and large PHP seems to be making the same progression of mistakes as early Perl did, only slower. The one thing it does better is packaging. And when I say packaging, I don't mean namespaces.

You may agree or disagree with Larry, but the article really is a jolly good read!

Just a braindump, since I have to look that up regularly: If you try to download QuickTime from Apple's site, you (since recently) cannot choose anymore whether you want the Windows or the Mac version. Instead, the server-side logic reads out the browser user agent string and shows you either the Windows or Mac page. Now imagine that you want to download the Mac version but from a Windows PC (for instance because your Mac only has dial-up). You could try to change your user agent strings to those of Mac Safari, but there is (at least currently) a more convenient way: Go to this direct download page which provides you with access to the Leopard, Tiger, and Panther versions of the latest QuickTime version. This URL is the very iframe that is loaded on the QuickTime download page — if you are using a Mac (or pretending to).

Update 2009-07-16: Still works for iTunes 8.2.1 (for Leopard and Tiger)

Sunday night, Microsoft released a first preview version of their ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions. This is a CTP package consisting of these features:

• ASP.NET MVC: The MVC framework for ASP.NET that everybody is longing for.
• ASP.NET Dynamic Data: A framework for creating data-driven websites
• ASP.NET AJAX Futures: Nothing new here
• ADO.NET Entity Framework: New data modelling tools
• ADO.NET Data Services: formerly known as "Astoria data service", also part of the ASP.NET Futures
• Silverlight ASP.NET Controls: formerly also a part of the ASP.NET AJAX Futures

So some new stuff, some old stuff, but obviously some very interesting stuff, almost too much to monitor. Oh well

Just stumbled upon two new Silverlight downloads:

• The Silverlight 1.0 SDK has been updated (at least according to the build date, 11/16/2007). Unfortunately I have no information regarding specific updates in there.
• Much more importantly, the Silverlight 1.1 tools for Visual Studio 2008 now finally support the RTM version that was released last week.

As promised, Visual Studio 2008 and ASP.NET 3.5 and .NET 3.5 have been released. Somehow the Team System Edition does not show up in my MSDN subscription yet, but the Professional Edition is downloading at full speed
Also, the Express Editions (including Visual Web Developer) have been updated; download them while they are fresh.
Note that this only applies to the English editions of Visual Studio 2008. Localized versions are usually following 4-8 after the English release.
In releated news, the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit team was super quick in updating the code for Visual Studio 2008; the build number is 3.5.11119.0. One of the new features I like best is that the new Visual Studio 2008 JavaScript IntelliSense feature (more about that in this blog entry) is now made possible throughout the Toolkit. Download the new Toolkit version here.

As far as I have seen, a two part interview the German online portal Golem conducted with Zeev Suraski in Mid-October went quite unnoticed in the non-German speaking community, so I thought that I would sum up the most important topics he covered (translation errors are all mine; I also tried to maintain the context of what Zeev said, but you never now):

• Zend Studio will continue to exist, even though the Eclipse PDT have been published. A new Zend Studio version should be available in the foreseeable future. Should time tell that everybody migrates over the Eclipse, Zend Studio may be superseded.
• [On PHP 6 migration:] Incompatibilities between PHP 5 and PHP 6 may be more severe than they were between PHP 4 and PHP 5. Everything possible is done to make the migration from 5 to 6 as seamless as possible.
• It will take at least one year until PHP 6 will be there.
• APC may be part of PHP 6, but there will also be a commercial Zend product.
• [On new features in PHP 6:] Unicode an PHP setup changes (referring to register_globals etc.). Most other new functionality may also come with PHP 5.3 or 5.4.
• Five or six developers work full-time on the Zend Framework.
• Zend plans to publish tools to facilitate and speed up development of Ajax applications with PHP [something I have been complaining about since years ;-)]

Die Münchner Volkshochschule veranstaltet in diesem Jahr erstmals den Kongress web.in.bewegung und gibt damit den Start frei für ein Forum, das zukünftig Webdesignern und Webentwicklern, Entscheidern, Seminarplanern und allgemein Interessierten regelmäßig hochwertige, praxisnahe und wegweisende Informationen zu aktuellen Entwicklungen im Internet liefern wird.
Der diesjährige Kongress steht ganz im Zeichen des Schlagwortes "Web 2.0", denn kaum etwas hat die Internet-Community in letzter Zeit so bewegt wie die vielfältigen Aktivitäten rund um das Web der zweiten Generation. Nun aber verfliegt der Hype und weicht einer realistischen Perspektive. Damit beginnt eine spannende Diskussion über die greifbaren Veränderungen der Medienlandschaft, die neuartigen Kommunikationsformen im Internet und die Frage, wer Web 2.0-Anwendungen nutzt und zu welchem Zweck dies geschieht.
